On March 23, 2024 Voices of the Diaspora brings together emerging diverse Afro, African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, and diaspora writers and actors in a dynamic showcase of talent in the heart of New York City's theater scene.

In this electrifying competition, NYC theatremakers and actors take the stage to deliver captivating monologues that explore the depths of human experience. From comedic anecdotes to gripping dramas, each performance offers a unique perspective on culture, identity, and the human condition.

Rules for the Monologue Slam Competition

  1. Objective: The Monologue Slam aims to showcase emerging diverse Afro, African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, and diaspora writers and actors in the vibrant theater scene of New York City.

  2. Eligibility:

    • Participants must be NYC theatremakers or actors.
    • All participants must identify as Afro, African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, or be from the African diaspora, or may perform a monologue written by a person who identifies as such.
  3. Submission Guidelines:

    • To be considered, applicants must complete the form below.
    • The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 8th.
    • Each submission must include a headshot and video links showcasing the participant's performance of their monologue.
    • Applicants must submit a $10 application fee along with the form. 
  4. Monologue Selection:

    • Monologues can be selected from any published play, film, or TV show.
    • Participants may also perform an original monologue written by themselves.
  5. Competition Format:

    • The competition will consist of three rounds.
    • In the first round, participants will perform a comedic monologue.
    • In the second round, participants will perform a dramatic monologue.
    • The finalists selected after the first two rounds will proceed to the third round.
    • In the third round, finalists will perform their chosen monologues with a twist, taking on directions given by the judges.
  6. Judging:

    • The competition will be judged by a panel of three experienced industry professionals from the NYC Theatre scene.
    • Judges will evaluate performances based on criteria such as delivery, emotional resonance, connection with the audience, and ability to adapt to directions in the final round.
  7. Prizes:

    • The first place prize for the Monologue Slam is $100 and 25 printed headshots*.
  8. Additional Rules:

    • Each participant will have a set time limit for their performance (e.g., 3-5 minutes), which will be communicated prior to the event.
    • Costumes and props are allowed but not required.
    • Participants must adhere to the principles of respect and professionalism throughout the competition.

By submitting an entry, participants agree to abide by these rules and any decisions made by the judging panel. The organizers reserve the right to disqualify any participant who violates the rules or engages in misconduct.

*Winners must provide their own digital photo to redeem the printed headshots prize.
